Metro has developed methods to quickly convert data from 2D ArcGIS shape files into Google Earth 3D kml files. The results can be emailed to anyone who has Google Earth, or they can also posted to the internet using a Google Earth plugin, either publicly or password protected.

In this example, land use height is the jobs + housing density of the Traffic Analysis Zone. Land use color represents the jobs/housing balance of all TAZs within 5-minutes of that TAZ. Yellow means the neighborhood is dominated by houses, blue is jobs, and pink is an even mix of both. The right-side highway is I-15 congestion in 2040 if nothing is done. The left side is congestion based on a proposal for new capacity. The height is the amount of traffic. The time slider shows how both density, mix of uses, and traffic levels change from present conditions to 2040.

This corridor analysis shows the value of freight on a corridor of interest by commodity type. This analysis was coordinated with Economic Development Research Group using their TREDIS software, to determine the overall annual cost of delays to freight on just this corridor segment, independent of any other costs to general traffic. Similar 3D displays can be created to show the value or tonnage of commodities based on origin and destination county or state, and all of it can be posted with popup windows to show attributes of any feature you click on, for self-guided tours.
